Introduction to "R" CPD course
IBIS has contracted Marine Monitoring Solutions (MMS) to deliver a Continuing Professional Development course for IBIS researchers and selected partners: "Introduction to statistical analysis using R".
The CPD will be delivered online (a virtual CPD) via the MMS website. If you are from an IBIS stakeholder organisation and are interested, contact [email protected]. Places are extremely limited. The CPD will introduce how to use R for statistical analysis; it will not not teach statistics. An understanding of the statistical processes listed to the right is assumed; the tutorials take the course attendee through how to implement each statistical test/process in the R environment. Enrolees will be provided with a copy of ‘Getting Started with R – An Introduction for Biologists’ by Andrew P. Beckerman & Owen L. Petchey (2012) free of charge. This will bring you up to speed and ensure that you get the most from this CPD. Beckerman & Petchey (2012) will teach you the very basic skills in R, i.e. how to install R, import data, generate basic exploratory data plots and do some simple tests. You can choose between hardcopy and e-book. Enrolees can ask questions on any aspect of the practical exercises. Responses given by MMS will be strictly to enhance the understanding of the mechanics of 'R' and not to teach statistics. General statistical questions arising from the course will be answered at the discretion of MMS. Constructive dialogue between the enrolees and MMS staff will be important for successful completion of the course. The course will be delivered through MMS's website hosting all course materials and providing a detailed overview. All 'R' software is freely available (no cost). There will be advice on the correct versions of ‘R’ to download for specific computer operating systems. After enrolment on the course and logging in to MMS's R website http://www.marinemonitoringsolutions.co.uk/Rmechanics/ with the registration details that will be sent by MMS, the students can email MMS questions on any aspect of the practical exercises. Responses given by MMS to students will be strictly to enhance the understanding of the mechanics of 'R' and not to teach statistics. General statistical questions arising from the course will be answered at the discretion of MMS. Student questions will be addressed via email dialogue between the student and MMS staff. MMS will aim to answer student questions within 48hrs of receipt of questions, during a normal working week (Mon-Fri, 9am-5pm). After you receive your login details you can start to use the web materials immediately; however the MMS email support is only available during the designated calendar month shown below. If the displayed month below to which you are allocated is a problem, contact: IBIS researchers: Liz or Jennifer. Others: [email protected] |
